Gastric Plication...

What is Gastric Plication?

The gastric plication surgical technique is a laparoscopic procedure that involves “tucking”  in the outer curved portion of the stomach. This shrinks the volume of the stomach, which causes the patient to be satiated more quickly. This technique can be used as an initial weight loss procedure, or as an option for weight loss revision surgery.

How is the Gastric Plication different from other procedures?

There are several factors that distinguish the plication technique from the other weight loss procedures. In contrast to  procedures such as the gastric bypass or the gastric sleeve, no portion of the stomach is removed, and the digestive system is not re-routed. Since there is no stomach removal or digestive system re-routing, the gastric plication is less risky and is reversible.

Additionally, there are no implanted devices in this procedure which may require adjustments such as with the LapBand procedure.

What can patients expect as an outcome from Gastric Plication?

Like other laparoscopic procedures, the gastric plication results in faster recovery and less scarring than open surgery because the incisions are so small. Patients generally resume normal activities in 10 days.

Patients can expect to lose 40-60% of their excess body weight within the first year after the surgery. As with other bariatric surgeries, there may be improvements in other weight-related conditions such as high blood pressure, diabetes, sleep apnea, and high cholesterol.
