While aspiring to look like a stick figure is not only outdated, unattainable, but completely unhealthy, the 32-year old with a bazillion achievements under her belt made the liberating comment in response to the body-shamers via TikTok in reference to a photo taken at the American French Film Festival in Los Angeles.
After being photographed with her hand on her stomach at the red-carpet event, Selena Gomez stated, “I don’t care that I don’t look like a stick figure. No, I am NOT a victim. I’m just human.”
Selena disclosed that she has been diagnosed with small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO), a chronic gastrointestinal condition. SIBO can cause bloating, gas, constipation, diarrhea, and malabsorption of nutrients. Bacterial overgrowth disrupts digestion by producing excess hydrogen or methane gases. Contributing factors include gut motility issues, stress, and diet. In addition, certain medical conditions like diabetes, lupus, or autoimmune diseases can contribute to SIBO.
Though the condition is not curable at this time, SIBO symptoms can be managed. Treatments often include antibiotics like Xifaxan or Neomycin and short-term dietary changes, such as a low-FODMAP diet. Emerging studies suggest herbal supplements may be equally effective, with options like FC-Cidal and probiotics proving beneficial. Fermented foods, such as kimchi and kefir, can help replenish healthy gut bacteria after treatment.
How Does this Relate to Obesity?
A meta-analysis from the National Library of Medicine found that individuals with obesity had double the risk of SIBO compared to individuals without obesity. Interestingly, this parallels with the risk of other weight related diseases. Studies show that 85% of individuals with type 2 diabetes are also classified as being overweight or having obesity.
And How Does This Relate to a Superstar?
Selena Gomez’s struggle with SIBO, a condition that generally doesn’t garner considerable attention, was publicized only because the star was put in the position to stand up to body-shamers. Whether or not an individual lives with SIBO, no matter their BMI, body shaming is inexcusable and ignorant. The reality is those who struggle with being overweight or having obesity are subject to the same ignorance as Selena Gomez, minus international superstardom.
The sad reality is that body-shamers are from extinction. However, options for treating obesity and accompanying weight-related diseases are wide-ranging, safe, and effective. For more information on permanent weight loss solutions, contact Dr. Korman’s office today.
