So...What's the Latest (Green) Tea?

Being dubbed as “Nature’s Ozempic” according to newfound fame on TikTok, someone is getting more attention than a pumpkin spice latte.

Green tea has long been associated with weight loss, but recent TikTok trends calling it “nature’s Ozempic” exaggerate its effects. While green tea contains compounds that might theoretically aid in weight loss, experts agree its impact is modest at best and far from comparable to medications like Ozempic.

Some TikTok claims focus on green tea’s potential to boost GLP-1, the gut hormone that helps regulate hunger and blood sugar. Semaglutide medications, such as Ozempic and Wegovy, mimic GLP-1, significantly by suppressing appetite and promoting weight loss.

Contrary to popular belief, TikTok is not omniscient. Green tea, however, has only shown minimal and inconclusive effects on GLP-1 production. Research in animals suggests green tea extract might lower blood sugar. Human studies, including research of 92 diabetic participants, found no notable impact on GLP-1 levels.

Green tea’s potential weight-loss benefits are primarily attributed to its levels of caffeine and polyphenols. Caffeine might slightly boost metabolism, while polyphenols—antioxidants found in green tea—may improve metabolism and reduce fat absorption. However, the overall evidence in humans is mixed, and any weight loss associated with green tea is minimal. A review of over a dozen studies found that green tea extract often led to insignificant weight loss, typically under four pounds.

Effects of green tea on weight loss are significantly minimal in comparison to medical treatments. Experts advocate for a holistic approach to weight management, focusing on overall diet, exercise, genetics, stress, metabolic health, and sleep quality.

Although green tea may provide health benefits, consuming this drink regularly isn't a substitute for medical treatment. For more information on procedures including the Endoscopic Sleeve Gastroplasty, Gastric Sleeve, or Medical Weight Loss options, contact our office.
